My crazy Puerto Rican neighbor Maria got me into this whole soursop leaf thing. I was walking by her kitchen window last month, and there was this bad smell coming out.” She is actually just boiling these weird green leaves, making some kind of tea. And she’s like, “This stuff is better than anything those doctors give you.”
Yeah, right, I’m thinking. One of those home cures old ladies swear by.
But Maria kept bugging me about it. Which meant all I ever heard about from her was soursop this, soursop that. Finally, I got curious enough to Google it. Oh, it seems there’s some actual science to what she’s been saying.
So soursop comes from this tree called Annona muricata. You might’ve seen the fruit at Whole Foods; it looks like a green pineapple had a baby with a cactus. The leaves are what people had been using for medicine way before anyone knew about vitamins or antioxidants.
Maria’s grandmother used to make this tea back in San Juan. “Mija,” she’d tell me, “my abuela lived to 97 drinking this stuff every day.” Could be genetics, could be the tea. Who knows?

And this is the big one that everybody talks about. Scientists found this stuff called acetogenins in the leaves. They have been shown to be capable of killing cancer cells in laboratory studies. But here’s the catch: that’s in petri dishes, not people. It’s interesting, but not proven yet, says my cousin’s oncologist.
My uncle Tony has diabetes. His doctor spoke to him about enzyme inhibitors, and you won’t believe that soursop leaves have them. Tony began drinking the tea with his metformin. His A1C has come down a bit, but he is also doing some other things.

Start slow. One cup every other day. See how you feel. Some people get stomach upset if they drink too much.
Maria’s not a doctor, and neither am I. Pregnant women shouldn’t drink this. People on blood thinners should be careful. If you’re on medication for anything serious, ask your doctor first.
Don’t be the person who stops taking real medicine because you read something online. That’s how people get in trouble.

I’m still drinking Maria’s tea. Still feels like it’s doing something good. Sometimes that’s enough.
