Trump’s government sent hundreds of people to El Salvador on Sunday. They were thought to be part of a Venezuelan gang. The Alien Enemies Act, which was passed many years ago, sped up the process. This was a brave move that made a lot of people talk. Some people were upset about the move because a federal judge stopped the deportations just hours before the planes took off.
The deportation flights, which included members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, were sent to El Salvador’s Center for Terrorism Confinement (CECOT), a notorious high-security prison. El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele confirmed the arrival of the deportees and shared footage of them being processed at the facility. The U.S. government will pay El Salvador $6 million to house the prisoners, with Bukele stating that the funds would help sustain the country’s penitentiary system.
Legal challenges quickly followed, with U.S. District Judge James Boasberg issuing a temporary restraining order to block the deportations. The order, which is valid for 14 days, was intended to prevent removals under the Alien Enemies Act. Boasberg verbally instructed that any planes carrying deportees should turn back. However, the Trump administration proceeded with the deportations, arguing that the order was issued after the flights had already left U.S. airspace.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump defended his decision, stating, “These were bad people. That was a bad group of, as I say, hombres.” He claimed that the deportations were necessary to combat crime and prevent an “invasion” of criminals. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt supported the president’s stance, arguing that the administration had not violated the court order since it came after the removals had already begun.
She dismissed the judge’s ruling, asserting that “a single judge in a single city cannot direct the movements of an aircraft carrier full of foreign alien terrorists.” The deportations have reignited debate over immigration policy and executive authority. Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act is very rare, since it has only ever been used in wartime in the past. His government has described the situation as a threat to national security, but critics say it is just a political move to show how strict they are on immigration before the election.
Senator Marco Rubio praised the deportations, thanking Bukele for accepting the alleged criminals and announcing that additional Salvadoran gang members in U.S. The person would also be sent back to face justice. Democrats, on the other hand, spoke out against the move and said that the rule of law is very important. It made House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries scared of the bad things that might happen if Trump’s strict immigration rules are put into place.
He said that these policies could cause legal immigrants and even U.S. citizens to be wrongfully deported. citizens. Legal experts suggest that if the court determines the administration willfully defied the judge’s order, further legal consequences could follow. Carl Tobias, a professor of constitutional law, said that the case brings up important questions about the split of powers and the right to due process.

If it turns out that the people in charge broke the order, they could be charged with contempt of court. Also, the event makes people worry about how things are at CECOT. Some people have said that the jail for 40,000 people is too hard on thieves. A lot of people rights groups have said that what it is doing is unfair and shouldn’t be allowed. Moving people who are thought to be in a gang to this type of jail without giving them a proper hearing could be against their human rights, some say.
Even though the court case is still going on, the deportations are adding to the disagreement in the US about how to handle immigration. There are a lot of different opinions on how the country should handle immigrants, national security, and the power of the president. It’s still too early to tell if the courts will finally say that the government’s actions are wrong.
