Eric Dane Announces ALS Diagnosis, Plans to Continue Work on ‘Euphoria’ Season 3

Eric Dane, who is known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on HBO’s Euphoria, has told the public that he has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), an illness that destroys nerve cells over time. Even though this is bad news, the 52-year-old actor is still dedicated to his job and will be back on the set of Euphoria for its third season, which will start filming on April 14, 2025.

For the first time, Eric Dane told People,

“I have been diagnosed with ALS.” I’m thankful that my loving family is with me as we move on to the next part of our lives. To make his point clear, he said, “I feel fortunate that I can continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week.”

He also asked that his family have privacy during this time. ALS, which is also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This makes muscles weaker over time, and finally, a person loses the ability to speak, eat, move, and breathe on their own. There is no fix yet, and most people only live three to five years after being diagnosed. However, some people live longer.

Eric Dane’s work includes several well-known parts, such as Jason Dean in Charmed and Captain Tom Chandler in The Last Ship. He has also been in movies like Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque. He has been married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart since 2004, and the couple has two daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine.

The upcoming third season of Euphoria is anticipated to delve into themes of moral integrity within a corrupt world, with creator Sam Levinson describing it as a “film noir.” Zendaya, who plays Eric Dane’s co-star, has hinted that the story may jump ahead in time.

Eric Dane’s willingness to talk about his ALS diagnosis brings attention to the disease and shows how dedicated he is to his work. As he keeps working on Euphoria, both friends and coworkers show their support and respect for his strength.
