Fort Liberty Fort Bragg Renamed to Honor WWII Hero Roland L. Bragg

In a significant policy reversal, the Pentagon has officially announced that Fort Liberty Fort Bragg will revert to the Bragg name—this time with a meaningful distinction. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17, signed a directive renaming the North Carolina base Fort Roland L. Bragg, commemorating a World War II hero rather than its original Confederate namesake, Gen. Braxton Bragg.

The transfer resulted from Fort Liberty being renamed Fort Bragg in 2023. Reducing military bases’ involvement with the Confederacy was a larger objective. However, the purpose of these modifications is to commemorate Private First Class and reconcile with the past. A brave man named Roland L. Bragg was given the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for his bravery in the Battle of the Bulge.

The official report from the Pentagon says that Pfc. Bragg showed incredibly bravery on the battlefield. This is a moment that defines the spirit of Fort Liberty Fort Bragg. Under heavy enemy fire, he took an enemy ambulance that had been left behind and drove it 20 miles to Belgium to help an injured soldier get to safety, which saved his life. The change also shows a larger evaluation of the Naming Commission’s plan.Congress told the committee at first to change the names of nine military bases that had names from the Confederacy, like Fort Bragg and Fort Liberty. One thing that is still not clear is how this change will impact money. A name change to Fort Liberty in 2023 was thought to cost more than $6 million. The Pentagon has not yet said how much this new name change will cost. Hegseth told the Army to give him a report on how much time and money the renaming will take.
