Rafael Caro Quintero, the notorious head of a drug gang, and 28 other wanted criminals have been officially sent from Mexico to the United States. This is a big step forward in the fight against organized crime. Caro Quintero was a key figure in the arrest, torture, and murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique Camarena in 1985.

People used to think that he was the boss of the Guadalajara Cartel. The violent act, shown on the Netflix show “Narcos,” is said to have been done in reaction to an attack in 1984 on Caro Quintero’s big marijuana farm. Caro Quintero was freed in 2013 because of a mistake in the law.

He had been locked up in Mexico for 28 years for his part in killing Camarena. However, the Mexican Supreme Court later overturned the decision. In July 2022, he was finally captured again by the Mexican Navy in a high-risk operation that tragically resulted in a helicopter crash, killing 14 Marines. A navy dog ultimately found him hiding in the bushes.

A very important thing that DEA Acting Administrator Derek S. Maltz said was that Caro Quintero should be extradited because “Mexico Rafael Caro Quintero has been one of the DEA’s most wanted criminals for decades.” The fact that he got to the U.S. shows how hard people will keep trying to get justice.

He also noted that the extradition serves as a warning to other cartel leaders that no matter how long they evade capture, justice will eventually be served. The Mexican Attorney General’s Office and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection coordinated the transfer of 29 criminals who were detained in various facilities across Mexico.

Some of the people who were deported were top leaders of major drug gangs, such as the Gulf Cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, and the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG). It has been proven by the U.S. Department of Justice that these people were involved in drug dealing and other major crimes.

Martin Sotelo, who is accused of killing Deputy Sheriff Ned Byrd in North Carolina in 2022, and Antonio Oseguera Cervantes, a top boss of CJNG, are two well-known people who have been deported. Ramiro Perez Moreno and Lucio Hernandez Lechuga, two well-known members of Los Zetas, were also turned over to U.S. officials.

The fact that they were extradited shows that the U.S. and Mexico are working together to break up dangerous crime networks. In a statement, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said, “Beyond the labels, we share a common goal with the U.S. government—to combat the violence these groups inflict on our nations.”

The timing of the extradition is notable, occurring just days before the U.S. is set to impose new tariffs on Mexican imports. Among the 28 other extradited individuals were key cartel operatives, including José Ángel Canobbio Inzunza, a close associate of “El Chapito,” and Antonio Oseguera, brother of “El Mencho,” the notorious leader of CJNG.

Miguel Angel and Óscar Omar Treviño Morales of Los Zetas are also on the list, as well as Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, also known as “El Viceroy,” from the Juárez Cartel. Someone named Caro Quintero is going to be charged with drug dealing and the murder of Agent Camarena in Brooklyn Federal Court.

The courtroom is likely to be full of DEA agents, some of whom have been after him for their whole lives. The extradition of Mexico Rafael Caro Quintero and his associates marks a historic moment in the fight against transnational crime. It serves as a strong message that no matter how powerful criminals may seem, justice will always catch up with them.
