Arrived from Cuba via the USA, Norval joined the British Army in Liverpool in 1916, during World War I. Declared fit for service, he stands five feet five inches and weights 124 pounds. Soon after, though, he complained of health problems including incontinence, which resulted in his being sent to a support battalion. Though claims of being a “Captain,” documents show Norval was a private and the designation “Captain” was more of a moniker than an official rank.
Norval moved to Jamaica following his military service, working as a plantation overseer. It was around this period he met Afro-Jamaican woman Cedella Booker. Though their ages were very different—Norval was in his early 60s and Cedella was 18—they married in 1944.
Their marriage produced Robert Nesta Marley, commonly known as Bob Marley, on February 6, 1945. But social pressures and family criticism brought problems into Norval and Cedella’s marriage that led to their divorce. Norval assisted financially even though he seldom took part in Bob’s upbringing.
Though Norval Sinclair Marley was not extremely active in Bob Marley’s life, Bob’s character and songs were much impacted by his mixed upbringing. Bob’s varied background exposed him to many cultural events, which he regularly found reflected in his songs. Bob Marley lacked a parental relationship, but the intricacy of his background impacted in part his viewpoint and artistic expression.
Bob was just ten years old when Norval Sinclair Marley passed away in 1955 following a heart attack. His death marked the end of a life rich in enigmatic choices and intimate relationships to few family members. Though Norval’s direct influence on Bob Marley was minimal due to his absence, Bob’s music continues a worldwide resonance, therefore safeguarding his legacy.
