If you’ve dropped any kind of money while shopping recently or scrolled through Instagram, you may have noticed something familiar returning: the pearl. Proper Classic pearls, but in all sorts of new ways.
It’s funny, isn’t it? Pearls were considered staid, old-fashioned, “mumsy” or something a grandmother would wear to weddings. Now they’re well and truly back. So what’s going on? Why are we suddenly seeing pearls on everyone again?
Let us tell you why pearls are all over the trend again.
To start, pearls always exude a timeless quality. They have never really gone out of style, have they? People wore them for special occasions even when they weren’t exactly trendy.
They’re just simple and classic; they look good on almost everyone. You can toss on a little pearl necklace with a nice dress and look fancy, or put on pearl studs, wear jeans and a T-shirt, and look polished. They look lovely.

So why are pearls such a thing at the moment? The main reason I think pearls are everywhere now is that designers have become a lot more bold with the classics. Long gone are the days when you might wear a necklace and matching earrings that hung to your shoulder in one long strand to a formal dinner.
Now, chunky pearl rings and mixed-metal chain necklaces with pearls are de rigueur, and fashion earrings come in unusual shapes, large baroque pearls—not round pearls—and perfectly imperfect pearls that are not even in size.
It feels less stiff and proper and more cool and creative. These days, even people who believed they didn’t like pearls before are giving them a try since they look new and updated.
Let’s face it, when a celebrity wears something, a lot of people tend to pay attention.
Harry Styles accessorises with pearls, often paired with suits or unbuttoned shirts, to give them an edge rather than a posh look. And Rihanna’s worn chunky pearl chokers, ones that are glam but also way more modern.
Guys working the red carpet are pairing them with casual shirts. It is no longer considered “women only” or “posh dos” only. Pearls are now something everyone can wear.
One of the big reasons they’re back is how easy they are to wear.
You don’t have to be attending a fancy event to put on a pair of pearl earrings. You can wear them with anything—jeans, jumpers, or office clothes. They can elevate an outfit without making it seem like you tried too hard.
Don’t overthink it. That’s a major selling point these days, when most people are looking for things that feel like they fit into their real life.
Pearls of the past were expensive and out of reach for many of us. But now? There are loads of high-street shops selling freshwater pearls or even really good fakes that look beautiful.
You don’t need to lose hundreds of pounds. If you like, you can nab yourself a lovely pair of earrings or a bracelet for £10 or £20.
This feature makes it much easier for consumers to try the trend without feeling like they’re wasting money.
Pearl jewellery comes in a variety of attractive styles. Pearls still have that little bit of magic about them. They feel special in a way that some other jewellery doesn’t.
Perhaps because they’re organic, formed inside oysters by nature, or because people often give them as gifts for birthdays or weddings.
So many of us may recall seeing our mums or grandmothers in them for special occasions. It may feel like a nod to that history, even if you’re wearing them in a new way.
Another factor that has helped pearls bounce back is a growing consciousness about what people are buying. Not everyone loves fast fashion, and many of us want things that last.
Pearls, if you care for them, are for eternity. They aren’t out of season every season. And they’re natural, which seems better to me than buying plastic accessories that will break in a year.
You can also pass them on to others. There’s something lovely about that.
That’s the fun part. There are no real rules anymore.
It’s not about being formal anymore. It’s about playing with them, making them yours.

So, why are pearls back in style?
The reasons are easy; they are classic but don’t have to be boring. They can be dressed up or down. Because they feel special but are within reach.
They’re suitable for all ages, all styles, and all situations. You can keep it minimal with tiny studs or go big with chunky, mismatched ones.
And best of all? They help you feel a bit more polished, even if you’re just popping to the store or meeting a friend for coffee.
So if you have old pearls tucked away in a jewellery box, it may be time to reach for them once again. Or indulge yourself with a fresh take on an old classic.
They’re back—and honestly, they’re better than ever.
